How Old Do You Need to Be?

Medical cannabis patients and recreational cannabis customers are subject to different age rules.

Adults must be at least 21 years old to purchase cannabis through Maine’s adult-use program. Medical cannabis patients who are 18 or older may participate in the medical program after receiving valid certification from an authorized provider. Maine also allows qualifying minors to participate under additional rules involving a parent, guardian, or caregiver.

Because Your Coastal Connection is a medical provider, being 21 is not the only consideration. A customer must be a qualifying patient and bring the appropriate medical documentation.

Parents or guardians seeking information for a patient under 18 should consult the patient’s healthcare provider and review Maine’s current medical cannabis rules before attempting to make a purchase.

Can Out-of-State Patients Purchase Medical Cannabis in Maine?

Maine recognizes valid medical cannabis credentials from many other states. A visiting patient must come from a jurisdiction approved by the Maine Office of Cannabis Policy and must have the documentation required to show that they are a qualifying medical patient in their home state.

The state’s approved list currently includes numerous jurisdictions, but that list can change. Visiting patients should check the Office of Cannabis Policy’s current reciprocity information before traveling to a medical provider.

Out-of-state patients should generally bring:

• A valid medical cannabis credential from an approved state
• A current government-issued photo ID
• Any supporting documentation required by Maine law

Patients are responsible for complying with both Maine’s laws and any restrictions imposed by their home state.

Cannabis also cannot legally be transported across state lines. Even when medical cannabis is legal in both Maine and a neighboring state, federal law prohibits taking it from one state into another.

How Much Medical Cannabis Can You Purchase?

A registered Maine dispensary may provide a qualifying patient with up to 2.5 ounces of harvested cannabis in one transaction. A visiting qualifying patient may not receive more than 2.5 ounces of a combination of medical cannabis and cannabis products during a 15-day period.

The rules can become more complicated when an order contains multiple product types, including cannabis flower, concentrates, or infused products. Product weight and equivalency calculations may affect how much can legally be sold in a single transaction.

Legal limits should not be viewed as recommended amounts. The amount a patient is legally permitted to purchase is not necessarily the amount that is appropriate for that individual.

Patients who are new to cannabis should discuss their needs with a qualified healthcare professional and ask dispensary staff for general product information. Starting cautiously is especially important with edible products because their effects may take longer to appear.

Bring Valid Identification Every Time

Even when our team knows a patient, valid documentation may still be required to complete a medical cannabis transaction.

Before leaving home, check that your photo identification and medical certification:

• Have not expired
• Display your current legal name
• Contain accurate information
• Are readable and undamaged
• Meet Maine’s current requirements

Keeping a digital image of a medical certification may be useful as a backup, but patients should not assume that an informal photograph or screenshot will satisfy every requirement. Maine’s rules establish specific standards for valid written certification.

Cannabis Must Remain in Maine

Cannabis purchased legally in Maine must stay within Maine.

Taking cannabis across a state border remains prohibited under federal law, regardless of whether the destination state also permits medical or recreational cannabis. This applies whether someone travels by car, plane, boat, or another form of transportation.

Cannabis should also not be taken onto federal property. Federal lands can include certain parks, government buildings, military facilities, and other locations under federal jurisdiction.

Visitors should plan accordingly and purchase only what they can legally possess and use while they remain in the state.

Public Cannabis Use Is Not Permitted

Legal cannabis does not mean cannabis may be consumed anywhere.

Cannabis use is generally limited to private property where the owner permits it. It should not be used in public spaces such as:

• Sidewalks
• Parks
• Beaches
• Restaurants
• Retail parking lots
• Public transportation
• Most hotels or rental properties without permission
• Vehicles

Property owners, landlords, employers, and lodging providers may establish their own cannabis policies. Patients should always confirm that use is permitted before consuming cannabis on property they do not own.

Medical authorization does not automatically override workplace rules, lease restrictions, smoke-free policies, or other property requirements.

Never Drive While Impaired

Driving while impaired by cannabis is illegal and unsafe. Medical patient status does not provide an exception.

Cannabis can affect judgment, coordination, reaction time, and perception. Patients should arrange safe transportation and avoid operating a car, truck, motorcycle, boat, or heavy equipment after using an impairing product.

It is also illegal to consume cannabis in a vehicle. Cannabis should remain properly packaged during transportation and kept away from the driver and passengers.

Patients should remember that different products can produce different effects. Edibles may take longer to begin working and can remain active much longer than inhaled cannabis. Never take more simply because the effects are not immediate.

Store Medical Cannabis Securely

Safe storage is particularly important in homes with children, teenagers, visitors, or pets.

Cannabis products should be:

• Kept in clearly labeled packaging
• Stored separately from ordinary food
• Placed in a locked or secure location
• Kept out of the reach and sight of children
• Protected from excessive heat, moisture, and sunlight
• Left in their original packaging when possible
